A 19th century waterway through London: The Back of Everywhere This waterway is clearly man made , not a product of the natural world like a stream or a river. It is absolutely straight and of uniform width. It cuts through one of Europe’s biggest and densest cities. As I was photographing I found that the banks of the canal are now the back of everywhere, every Business Park, warehouse, office, terraced housing, in fact it seems like the back of London. The canal was originally built in the 1850s to transport goods between the manufacturing towns of the north, and London. Today, some of it is a derelict, over- grown wilderness, in other parts you can see through glass windows into offices and apartments.
